Cotton Pickin Tired

Yesterday I wrote about the 5K race I was scheduled to run today. I said I'd update my blog to tell if I'd run or not.

I did not run.

OK, OK, stop it, stop it! I had a hell week. By the time Friday came around I was passing out at my desk. I don't know what exactly is going on, but I am just collapsing. So Saturday when my alarm went off for me to get up and run, I turned it off, briefly grew painfully aware of how incredibly tired I still was after a full night of sleep, and passed right back out again. I got up later and went downtown to see how things came out.

Here's a photo of all the people wandering around after the race looking at craft tables and a big car show:

Click on the photo and make it larger. Do you see the 2 girls in the lime green t-shirts with 5K written on it? Those are the shirts people got when they registered for the race. I'm supposed to have one, but I never got my race packet, so I don't know where it is. Looking at those 2 girls I can't help but think "I could have beat them, even as tired as I am." Yeah, especially if they ran with the child on their shoulders and the shopping bags. Every little bit helps.

When I first arrived downtown half the people there were wearing their race shirts. But the runners cleared out pretty quickly and went home  to recover. I wanted to see the cars. Even if I had run, I would have stuck around to see all the cars. I just would have been scary looking and deathly tired as I did it.

OK, I don't have a good excuse for not running. I didn't train at all. I was afraid of an injury. I was worn to a frazzle from working all the time. I haven't found a way to get to the gym with this job, but somehow I'm going to have to. Either that or I'm going to have to change jobs again. No one is paying me well enough to sacrifice my health just for  the 'privilege' of working for them. Once you lose your health its a monster trying to get it back.

So, it wasn't a bad day. I spent hours and hours looking at everything downtown. It wasn't too hot, either. It would have been a good day for me to run. I should have run. I didn't. What more can I tell you?

Friday the 13th - Pre Race Day

Well, it's the day before my next race, the Cotton Pickin 5K. How much have I trained for this race you ask? I'm so glad you asked me that.

I have not trained one single bit. I have been so totally overwhelmed at work that I don't have any hope of training during lunch. By the time I get home  from work it's after 7, sometimes after 8 or 9, and dark outside. There are no streetlights around here, or not very many, and it's dangerous to run at night here for that reason, as well as because of the wild animals.

I joined a gym about 5 miles or so from my house. It's the closest gym I could find. But I haven't been even once. I've worked and worked some more, but not found any time for working out.

Tomorrow's race starts at 8:30 in the morning. I'm no morning person. All week long I have steadily grown dramatically more tired. I have fallen asleep at work while typing. Today I fell asleep while drinking coffee. I'm not even kidding. That's how tired I am.

Odds of my making it to this race are not good. Odds of my making it to this race, picking up my race packet, pinning on my number and running the race from beginning to end are even worse. But that doesn't mean it won't happen.

If by some miracle I wake up tomorrow morning feeling peppy and ready to run, there is the added, er, problem of the car show that is going on after the race. I go to this car show every year. I spend hours there. I get sun burned walking around looking at all the cars and taking photos. If I make it to the race and actually run then I know that I will be limping around the car show for hours, smelling like a really nasty pair of old men's underpants and looking like death. But I will still go to the car show, take photos, and get sunburned.

Come Sunday I will be a disaster. But there is work to do around the house, including mowing. And my car needs the front rotors replaced. This falls to me. I have the rotors. What I don't have is the desire to do them just now. The sidewalk and driveway needs edging. And the last time I started my motorcycle it rain very badly and then stalled, which means I need to get serious about cleaning out that carburetor.

If you're at all interested, I'll try to update this blog this weekend and say whether or not I did or did not run. Otherwise, what's the point of writing this post, right?

Of course.

New Gym

OK, I've joined a new gym. I haven't gone to it yet, at least as far as a workout is concerned. I did spend a half hour there discussing computers with the owner while I signed my new membership. It's a pretty bare bones gym, but it has treadmills to run on, ellipticals for when my knees or calves are torn up, and free weights for all the workouts I haven't done in a long, long time and now need to start catching up on. Lately my triceps have been giving me a hard time - I think they call it atrophy and it hurts - because they want me to go and do some heavy bench presses, dips and nose busters. Funny how my biceps never do this. Then again, my biceps have never been nearly as strong or well developed as my triceps.

Penny just kicked Sheldon out of  her car. Sorry, watching TV while I type.

I've been reading the book "The Wizard of Oz" just for the heck of it. It's a bit different than the movie. For one thing, Dorothy is a lot younger than in the movie. For another, there is a lot of story left after the Wizard accidentally floats away in his balloon, leaving Dorothy stuck in Oz.

I have a race in a week and a half and I've done exactly no training whatsoever for it. The odds of my ending up injured are pretty high. The odds of my not even getting out of bed and going to the start are even higher. Time just got away from  me and this  is a race I've never run before. Setting a personal best for a race is easy if you've never run it before. Whatever time I do it in, that'll be my personal best for that race. Don't want to set the bar too high right off the bat, see?

My car is filled with dead grass. Apparently when I mow the grass ends up all over the driveway right next to my driver's door. Every morning when I crawl out to the car to get in and drive to work grass must be sticking to my feet and climbing into the car with me, where it jumps off and hides in the floor while I go on inside  to work. I can't blame the grass for not wanting to come all the way into work with me, but it would sure make my life easier.

They're trying to force Sheldon to get his own driver's license.

Anyway, I'm going to stop here.

Meme Monday

Stole it from Momspective, as usual. Thanks Momspective!

MEME!

Do you prefer a lot of ice in your drinks or just a little bit of ice?
It depends on what drink. If it's water I use tons of ice. Coke and only a little ice. Beer I like frozen almost solid so that it forms its own ice.

Which condiment (ketchup, mustard, etc.) do you use the most of?
Used to be I was a ketchup using fool. But these days with my bringing my own lunch to work and making the exact same sandwich almost every day, I am now a Mustard Machine.

Does war scare you?
I've  never been to war so I can bravely say 'no, it doesn't.' But if I were to suddenly find myself on a battlefield with people shooting at me I believe I'd change my answer. And my shorts.

Do you know any songs that are older than you are?
Do I know them how? Like as friends? I know several musicians who are older than me and they have written some songs. There are tons and tons of songs older than me. Many of them were written by men high on drugs and the drugs are older than me, too.

Are you comfortable sharing drinks with your friends?
It depends on the friend. If she's hot, I'll share anything she wants. If its a guy, not so much. Also it depends on the drink. Certain alcoholic drinks are powerful enough to kill anything, so you can share it with a stray dog if you want and it won't hurt you any more than it would have already.

What season were you born in?
Football season.

Have you ever spent over $100.00 on an article of clothing? What was it?
I have. It was a heavily insulated winter coat. I still have it. And it's ugly as sin.

Do you think you’re too hard on yourself sometimes?
Sometimes I beat myself to a pulp. Other times I let myself off too easily. Who knows where the perfect balance lies? Lays? Lies. Is.

What pizza place do you usually order from?
I used to be a big Papa Johns fanatic, but once I moved out from town I no longer live near any Papa Johns restaurants. So now I drive into town and pick it up from Pizza Hut.

Honestly, have you ever mooned or flashed somebody?
Honestly, yes and yes.

Do you have a least favorite color?
I'm no fan of pale pink. It reminds me of vomit. And it also makes me want to vomit. This is a bad combination.

Honestly, have you ever written something on a bathroom stall?
When I was in the 2nd grade I had already learned every cuss word there was to know courtesy of my older brother. Unfortunately what I didn't know was how to spell those words. My attempts to write them onto the bathroom wall were somewhat less than spectacular as a result.

Who do you consider to be the king of pop?
Robin Scott, the musician allegedly responsible for the song "Pop Muzik" in the '80s.

Do you know all of the words to any childrens song?
I was once a child, so yes.

Can you name 3 purple foods?
I'd have to steal Julie's answer or else start picking apart my salad and trying to figure out what some of those things in there are. They're purple and I don't eat them. I think they're some sort of onion.

When was the last time you made a pinkie promise?
I'm a guy. I've never known any guy to make a pinkie promise, ever.

What celebrity do you wish would have a big comeback?
Traci Lords

Do you think your parents know things about you that you don’t want them to?
I'm sure they did, but now they're so old they don't know what they know anymore

Have you ever walked into a spider web?
Yesterday while searching for a lost cat. That was a big M-Fin' spider, too.

What grocery store do you usually get your food from?
Kroger, although if they shrink the packaging any further on their stuff I'm going to have to dump them.

What would be your happily ever after?
Me and Heidi Klum and our kids living on our private island off the coast of Australia after I won the biggest lottery ever

When was the last time you spoke in front of a large group of people?
Does yelling at some jackass in rush hour traffic count? This morning.

Who is the worst driver you know?
Ora Mae Hakanson will forever hold that title with me and everyone who ever knew her. That woman was a terrifyingly bad driver before she got old, and she never got any better over time. The fact that she never died in a horrific car crash or ran anybody over is all the proof any atheist should ever need that there is a God and sometimes he protects people for reasons that only he understands.

How about the best driver?
Ben Collins replied to an email I sent him last month so does that count as knowing him? If so then he is the best driver I know. He was The Stig and it doesn't get much better for driving than The Stig.

Are you shorter or taller than most of your friends?
I don't know. I never really thought about this. I'm 6 feet tall. Does that tell you anything in relation to this question? I guess it'd depend on whether most of my friends are male or female maybe.

Do you know anybody who was born on a holiday?
I know several people who were CONCEIVED on a holiday. Is that close enough?

What is one thing you really don’t like sharing?
Toothbrushes

Have you ever been hit on through text message?
Not that I can recall. But there are only a handful of people who ever text me, and most of them are female and hotter than me.

What was the last junk food you ate?
Today was a bring-your-favorite-desert day at work, oddly enough, so I ate a ton of junk today. I think the last junk I ate was a piece of chocolate pie. It was good, but after all the other stuff I was so high on sugar my head was spinning.

Do you prefer sweet or sour candy?
Depends on my mood and which candy. But usually I prefer sweet.

What was the last alcoholic beverage you consumed?
Probably a beer my neighbor handed me last time I was over at this house. I can't remember. I only drink on social occasions. Or if I'm getting sick I'll do a shot of something strong, but it's honest-to-God for medicinal purposes. And it works, too. Jager cures the common cold. So does Scotch, Whiskey or Bourbon.

Currently waiting on something/someone?
I'm waiting on a miracle.

What was the last thing you watched on television?
Mr Jones starring Richard Gere and Lena Olin. I had never seen her before, but she was really hot. And apparently she's done a ton of movies. I just never saw any of them.

How old will you be in 12 months?
12 months older than I am now.

Do you sleep naked?
I'm always naked under my clothes. But aside from that, no.

Have you ever held hands with someone in a car?
Probably

Could you go the rest of your life without smoking a cigarette?
Sure, that'd be easy.

What do you say during awkward silences?
Nothing. That's what makes the silence.

When will you next see the last person you texted?
There's no guarantee we'll ever see each other again. We haven' seen each other in about a year now.

Honestly, when is the last time you have been to Texas?
6 years ago maybe. I was sent to the Dallas/Ft Worth area for work. They made me travel all around both cities in a kind of very large loop over the course of a week. While I was there I met up with a blogger. It was kind of fun.
